In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking masterwork, A Doll’s House, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event—when Nora slams the door on everything in her life—instantly propelled world drama into the modern age. A Doll’s House, Part 2 was written by Lucas Hnath as a possible continuation of the Ibsen’s story. Fifteen years have passed, and now there is a knock on that same door – Nora has returned. But why? And how will her husband and family react to her reappearance?
A Doll’s House, Part 2 received eight 2017 Tony Award nominations when it debuted on Broadway. The play poses thoughtful questions about marriage, gender roles, and equality, and works both as a sequel and as a stand-alone play. A familiarity with Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is not necessary to enjoy this play.
