A Fine Mess has a loyal and rapidly-growing group of followers they call Messmates. Their appeal comes from their unique treatments of American, Irish and Scottish folk music. They are each accomplished instrumentalists, but their exceptional instrumentation is designed to highlight their vocal harmony. The folk songs in their repertoire are predominantly story-songs—up-tempo sea shanties, Irish Rebel songs, or more recent folk compositions by Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Lyle Lovett or Steve Goodman.
They do not, however, limit their performances strictly to folk songs. Whether blues, pop or a novelty song, they love to play songs their fans find familiar and can perhaps sing along to Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, the Bee Gees, etc. The best characteristic of the group, however, is their ability to have fun. They don’t take themselves too seriously. They believe a concert, above all, should be enjoyable entertainment that will put a smile on your face. Once you’ve heard them, you’ll conclude that they are a very Fine Mess indeed.
