Downtown Walla Walla Foundation partners with events that promote downtown and increase foot traffic for businesses. It's all part of keeping the heart of Walla Walla a vibrant place. The foundation assists in making the following events successful.
Peach Basket Classic
For nearly 15 years, the Peach Basket Classic has taken place in our downtown. It is a very successful tournament, with more than 200 teams. The YMCA runs the event, which brings locals and tourist into our downtown.
Tour of Walla Walla
This bicycle event occurs the weekend after Feast in April. They use our downtown on Saturdays and close off Main Street for a period of time. It is one of the largest bicycle events in the Northwest and has been happening in Walla Walla for more than 15 years. Usually 400 riders race, and many of them are from out of town. Allegro Cyclery sponsors the event.
Sweet Onion Festival
This is a small festival and they run their two-day event between Second and Fourth on Main. The foundation works with them through our Farmers Market. The event draws locals and tourist into our downtown.
Jazz and Wine with Friends
Each year we have supported one of Friends of Children of Walla Walla’s primary events – Jazz and Wine with Friends. The foundation supports this event because on a Friday evening they use anywhere from three to five of our downtown wine tasting rooms or restaurants to put on their event.
Celebrate Walla Walla
Each non-profit economic development group tries to help the other group be successful. Wine plays a big role in the economic success of our downtown. More than 20 wineries or wine-tasting rooms bring residents and tourists to our downtown. The foundation feels that supporting the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance’s largest event is critical. It indicates support both for the industry and our wine-tasting rooms.
Frontier Days Parade
The Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days Parade kicks off the Walla Walla County Fair. It features 125 entries, including floats, mounted groups, bands, antique cars, marching bands, horse drawn wagons, clowns and more.
Recess Monkeys is the nationally acclaimed trio of elementary school teachers who make music for kids and families. They performed free concerts for kids on Main Street. The concerts are made possible by the foundation in conjunction with The Moms’ Network, the YMCA, the Walla Walla Public Library, Bright’s Candies, Sweet Basil Pizzeria, Book & Game, Salumiere Cesario, Brasserie Four, Capps Broadcasting and Olive Marketplace & Cafe.
Paint the Town Pink
J.U.G.S. (Just Us Girls Sharing) is a local non-profit that raises money for breast cancer victims. The annual Paint the Town Pink fundraising event takes place on Main Street and features merchant booths that offer pink hair extensions and feathers, face-painting, mask decorating, palm reading, pink fingernail painting, chair massages, a photo booth, pink cotton candy, pink cupcakes, pink pony rides and more.
