Live Cinema — Macbeth: Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma

Tony and BAFTA Award winner Ralph Fiennes (Antony & Cleopatra, Schindler’s List, Coriolanus) and Olivier Award winner Indira Varma (Present Laughter, Game of Thrones, Luther) star in a brand-new ‘full-voltage visceral’ (Daily Telegraph) production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Filmed live at Dock X, a custom-built theatre space in London, this critically acclaimed staging of Macbeth ‘that quickens the pulse, then goes for the jugular’ (Financial Times) will be unmissable on the big screen.

Directed by Simon Godwin (Antony & Cleopatra, Romeo & Juliet, Hansard) with set and costume design by Frankie Bradshaw (Jerusalem, Blues for an Alabama Sky), this is a cinematic and ‘beautifully staged’ (WhatsOnStage) production that brings ‘Shakespeare’s tragedy pulsing into the present day’ (The I).

Macbeth is coming. A couple corrupted by their relentless lust for power have blood on their hands. Witness the gripping tale of greed, murder, deception, and superstition in cinemas for a limited time only. Once you cross the line, you can never turn back.

Kate & the Crocodiles

Kate & The Crocodiles is a Portland-based trio that presents compelling indie rock originals and covers mixed with early jazz, classical art songs, and reinventions of classic rock. If the spectrum sounds broad, it is all held together by a signature sound informed by classical sensibilities and a respectful blending of the genres. It’s like a warm conversation with a good friend.

The band is made up of Kate Morrison, a refreshing and innovative classically-trained vocalist and player of generally small instruments (ukulele, toy drums, etc.), performing as a guest vocalist with Pink Martini, the Oregon East Symphony and Utah Symphony; Craig Bidondo, a colorful, energetic and soulful keyboardist; Gavin Bondy, the intuitive trumpeter of Pink Martini.

An evening with Kate & The Crocodiles has been called “A perfect combination of musical talent and intimate, unforgettable entertainment.”

With some variation, the instrumentation goes like this:

  • Craig Bidondo — keyboards

  • Gavin Bondy — brass

  • Kate Morrison — vocals, strings, maybe a toy drum set?

Film: Sometimes I Think About Dying

Lost on the dreary Oregon coast, Fran wastes her daylight hours in the solitude of a cubicle, listening to the constant hum of officemates, occasionally daydreaming to pass the time. She is ghosting through life, unable to pop her bubble of isolation. Then, Robert started up at the company. He is new to town and the dynamics of the office. He is a naturally friendly person who keeps trying to chat with Fran. Though it goes against every fiber of her being, she may have to give this guy a chance.

Director Rachel Lambert and her team craft beautiful cinema for this delicately told story of love for the socially awkward and emotionally challenged. The film is made all the more human by its lovely cast (which features Walla Walla’s own Rich Hinz), but this is most prominent in the penetrating eyes of lead actor-producer Daisy Ridley and the caring smile of lead actor Dave Merheje. Sometimes, I Think About Dying is an unexpected fable on the virtues of living.

We hit the road for many reasons: to seek, to escape, to grieve, to revive. Jews find deeper meaning in the phrase Lech-Lecha —Hebrew for “go forth” or “go to yourself”— the notion that, consciously or not, guides the characters in this program of shorts: from the addict who drags her friend on a quest to Tzfat, to the animated grandmother drag-racing to escape the law; from the man who drives a young woman to the border to a mother and daughter turn a trip to a big-box store into a referendum on familial hierarchies and desires.

Film: Vishniac

Roman Vishniac from his early years in tsarist Russia to his emergence as a modernist photographer in Weimar Berlin, his journeys across Eastern Europe before the war, and his family’s dramatic escape to America in 1940. After the war, Vishniac’s documentation continued with photographs of Berlin in ruins and children in displaced persons camps. Then, in a stunning shift, he turned almost exclusively to scientific photography, where he made considerable contributions in the field of microscopy. His “Living Biology” series, funded by the National Science Foundation, features some of the first films depicting life through a microscope. They became a staple in the 1960s and 1970s in classrooms across the United States. The brilliant artist, however, is best known for his iconic images of Jewish life in Eastern Europe from 1935 and 1938, the last visual records of these communities before they were wiped out.

The film is narrated by Vishniac’s daughter, Mara Kohn Vishniac, who was born in Berlin in 1926. Her clear-eyed view of her father adds to the complexity of a man who was a sometimes unreliable narrator of his own life story. She was his helper in the darkroom and his “alibi” for photographing Nazi propaganda with her posed innocently in front of it. Growing up in her father’s shadow, Mara sought to break free of his grip, only to come around and embrace his legacy. Ultimately, she took responsibility for preserving his diverse and stunning body of work, a haunting eulogy to a world on the brink of destruction.

Live Music: Ímar

Known for “genuinely jaw-dropping collective virtuosity,” as The Scotsman puts it, BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners, Glasgow-based five-piece Ímar stand out from the crowd – by taking things back to basics.

With a line-up featuring members of Mànran, Mec Lir, RURA, and Talisk and a heavyweight collective haul of top prizes – including the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Musician Of The Year, 2016 BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year, BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, Young Folk Award, nine All-Ireland and eight All-Britain titles – the group’s formation embodies a personal reconnection with its members’ formative years, dating back long before their recent camaraderie around Glasgow’s justly celebrated session scene.

Adam Brown (bodhrán), Adam Rhodes (bouzouki), Mohsen Amini (concertina), Ryan Murphy (uilleann pipes), and Tomás Callister (fiddle) share a strong background in Irish music – although only Murphy hails from Ireland; Rhodes and Callister are from the Isle of Man, whilst Amini is a Glasgow native, and Brown originally from Suffolk. These foundations underpin many of Ímar’s distinctive qualities in both instrumentation and material.

The band’s unmistakable synergy centers on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man. All three places once shared the same Gaelic language, and a similar kinship endures between their musical traditions.

Live Theater: One Noble Journey

Henry “Box” Brown was an African American born into slavery in 1816 in Louisa County, Virginia. Although he was not subjected to physical violence, Henry’s story (the basis for One Noble Journey) demonstrates the cruelty of slavery was every bit as devastating to the heart as it could be to the body. After his family was torn apart and parceled out to various beneficiaries of the estate, Henry devised an ingenious escape plan – sealing himself in a wooden box for shipment to friends and freedom in Philadelphia.

Wiley’s utterly astounding work most often splits my heart open. Then it heals it — but requests to leave little scars. And it’s the scars that enable a bit more stretch, a bit more understanding, a bit more light.
— Stephen Barefoot

One Noble Journey also recounts the daring and miraculous quest for freedom of Elizabeth Craft and her husband William, who was born into slavery in Georgia. Ellen Craft, who was very light-skinned, disguised herself as a sickly white gentleman traveling to Philadelphia for medical treatment. Ellen and William, who acted as her slave throughout the journey, bravely traveled on public trains and steamers as they made their way up the eastern seaboard to Philadelphia. Eventually, they were forced to sail for England after the Fugitive Slave Law enabled slave hunters to pursue them even in free states.

About Mike Wiley: Acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley has spent the last decade fulfilling his mission to bring educational theatre to young audiences and communities across the country. In the early days of his career, Wiley found few theatrical resources to shine a light on key events and figures in African-American history. To bring these stories to life, he started his own production company. Through his performances, Wiley has introduced countless students and communities to the legacies of Emmett Till, Henry “Box” Brown, and more.

Film: Holy Frit

“The last time I was this entertained by an art documentary was Exit Through the Giftshop featuring none other than Banksy.” — Josiah Teal, FilmThreat.

In this visceral three-year race against time, a talented yet unknown L.A. artist bluffs his way into winning a commission to create the largest stained-glass window of its kind. The problem is he doesn’t know how to make it.

The documentary “Holy Frit,” directed by Justin S. Monroe, takes place in the chaos at Judson Studios, among the artisans who have devoted their lives to stained glass. This includes principal designer Tim Carey, who began as an oil painter. After netting a bid in 2014 to build a stained-glass window as big as a basketball court, Carey invites legendary glass maestro Narcissus Quagliata to the studio for two weeks for a crash course in techniques. One radical method is sprinkling “frit” (finely ground colored glass) across the completed panels. The “frit” fuses with the existing panels, creating painterly impressionistic effects. Everyone is outside their comfort zone.

Caesar Sings Nat 'King' Cole

Caesar Sings Nat 'King' Cole

As soon as anyone hears Caesar’s smooth baritone vocals and debonair delivery, listeners instantly recall Cole. As the Screen Actors Guild said, “Caesars’ smooth velvet voice has often been compared to Nat King Cole’s, but he has his interpretation and style that compares to no one but is essentially and superbly… Caesar.”

Caesar’s vocals are powerfully delivered with poise, elegance, and grace, whether accompanied by a big band, orchestra, or sparse acoustic guitar or piano instrumentation. A Chicago native, Caesar has toured the world accompanying Julio Iglesias, who has sold over 300 million records, becoming the first and only male vocalist ever to tour with the global superstar.

In August 2021, Caesar was diagnosed with cancer. His doctors told him that he could lose his voice and hearing during his five cycles of chemotherapy and 36 radiation treatments to his head and neck. Caesar remained optimistic and told his doctors to help him prepare for his next show. On February 24, 2022, Caesar headlined at the Kennedy Center with the Symphony Orchestra, 28 days after his last radiation treatment on January 4, 2022. He is cancer-free today, continues singing jazz standards and love ballads in five languages.

Caesar recorded selections from Cole’s songbook at Capitol Studios, in Studio A, singing into the same microphone and utilizing the same Steinway piano that Cole used in the 1950s. “Jazz Standards for Today’s Audience,” later retitled “Caesar Sings Nat King Cole,” was engineered by 23-time GRAMMY-winning legend Al Schmitt.
